Chuy Varela Sunday, August 21, 2005

While the scene for Brazilian music is not as big as it is for salsa, it holds its own. Over the last half of the 20th century, it has integrated into our artistic fabric and kept growing. Now, thanks to a rich migration of Brazilian artists, this region is seen as a leader deserving of Point of Culture status. Gil has designated 260 in Brazil, with Paris the only international location officially announced so far.

"Pronounced "sh? ro," it literally means "to cry" in Portuguese, and it is a music with deep roots in the caf? culture of 1920?s Rio De Janeiro....Choro has been called modern acoustic jazz, classical ensemble repertoire, traditional dance forms based around a samba groove, and syncopated movement within African rhythmic structures....For Crying High, Choro is a powerful and rhythmic musical landscape." Mike Marshall
In 1995 Mike traveled to Brazil and fell in love with Brazilian choro music. Upon returning Mike began an in-depth study of the style and the result was the CD Brasil (Duets) on Earthbeat! records. This project showcases Mike at the top of his form as a mandolinist in duet settings with many of the top instrumentalists of the day.
