NYC's Borokeete wants to be #1 |
 |
Borokeete
USA founded in 1987 in Brooklyn, New York in order to
embrace and advance Caribbean heritage in the United States. The
West Indian-American Labor Day Carnival Parade is a spectacular
cultural event held annually in Brooklyn, New York. In the
twenty two years of our existence, Borokeete International Inc.
has grown exponentially and has always maintained a major
presence at this very impressive parade. We have been awarded
the prestigious title of Best Costume Band many times because of
not only our enormous popularity and great audience anticipation
but because of our ability to far surpass all other participants
every year.
In 2007 their carnival presentation was Cibola
Quest which won second place from the judges. Their
display of the magnificence
of the Carib and Arawak stunned the crowd with
their artistry. Borokeete is most proud of being voted the
people's choice for band of the year 2007. The 2008 presentation
is Beauty of the Dark Continent and Borokeet has been claiming
title of #1 NYC mas band of late as they take on the duty of
honoring the ancestors appropriately by sharing their stories
through song, dance and mas portrayal.
. The atmosphere of the night was mythical and
exotic forcing all in attendance, including myself, to drift
away to an African safari with the sounds of pan and drums in
the background. That night Borokeete USA, officially changed
their name to Borokeete International Inc.
At the full band launching on July 5th
Borokeete revealed the full 13 sections at Secrets in Brooklyn.
V. Farnum writing for carnivalnetwork said;
"Each section was reflecting some aspect of African heritage.
The atmosphere of the night was mythical and exotic forcing all

safari with the sounds of pan and drums in the background. That

Mike "Big Mike"
Antoine with co-director
Juliet de la Bastide |
|
To say that Sesame Flyers has dominated the Eastern Parkway
Mas Band Competition is an understatement. For 2008 they
will be going for their 10th championship in a row, a record not
likely to be broken for many decades to come. Credit to the
leadership begins with getting to know the
bandleaders who are among the most acclaimed in the art form.
Mike “Big Mike” Antoine and Juliet de la Bastide are best know
for their work in with the Trinidad Carnival Big Band
"Legacy." continue their winning ways in the Big Apple
Mike "Big Mike" Antoine has been involved in Trinidad and
Tobago culture and Carnival for many years. As a youth in the
1970's, he was not only an avid masquerader playing Fancy Sailor
with Bands such as Catelli All Stars, Third World Steel
Orchestra and Nestle Ambassadors, he also "beat pan" with Blue
Diamonds and performed in the Prime Minister's Best Village
Competition. In the 1980's, Mike organised a series of cultural
and talent shows throughout Trinidad and Tobago, scouting young
artistes and providing a forum for these youths to showcase
their talent. He quickly became a well-known promoter,
responsible for a number of popular events.
Having made a number of forays into the Mas, playing King of the
Bands in 1994 and conceptualising his own Section and J'Ouvert
Band, Big Mike fulfilled his vision when he co-founded the Band
Legends in 1995. Five-time Band of the Year winner and the
holder of many other titles, Legends' success speaks for itself.
As Head of Production and Designer of Legends' winning
portrayals, not only in T&T, but also in New York, Boston, Long
Island, Miami, Texas, London, Barbados, St. Martin, St. Kitts,
St. Lucia, Grenada and Antigua, Big Mike has been a driving
force in the Mas arena. |
 |
Juliet de la Bastide began her career
more traditionally than most by entering the high-brow area or
international banking. This began first with a
Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business with minors in French and
Spanish, Juliet spent 11 years in the Banking Industry, holding managerial posts
in the Corporate and International Banking Division at the
former Royal Bank of Trinidad & Tobago, now RBTT Bank.
In 2002, Juliet left the Bank to dedicate herself full-time to
Legends Carnival Band. However, her involvement in the world of
entertainment and culture began over 13 years ago when she began
working with Big Mike in his promotions. Sharing Mike's vision
to make a contribution to the culture, Juliet was a founding
committee member of Legends. She played a major role in
formulating and implementing administrative systems and
marketing strategies for Legends Band and (from 2002) managed
the day-to-day office and showroom operations at the Mas Camp.
Juliet is a well-known masquerader, having played Queen of the
Band for Legends in 1997, and appearing on stage each year
thereafter in a series of stunning Individual costumes. |
