A Guide to the 1964/65 New York World's Fair
1939/40 New York World's Fair
The 1964/65 New York World's
Fair
Was a powerful historical landmark representing a changing of the guard from the innocence
and trust in American institutions to a more cynical worldview. This hopeful vision of
progress opened shortly after the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy shocked
the nation. The years ahead would note this great fete as the time when the first
disenchanted voices of opposition to the country's role in the Vietnam war would lead to
the people's loss of unquestioned faith in the goodness of the USA's world view. Visit
this site's memorabilia of the last great World's Fair and reflect upon the last hurrah
for an optimistic if somewhat nihilistic view of a state of America we can no longer
aspire to. However, Carnaval culture invites the cycle to repeat itself except with an
updated world view reflecting fewer borders, greater diversity and an optimistic joyful
take on our place as the generation stepping forward into the great multicultural dance of
the 21st century.
