EVERYONE is welcome for Carnaval! No experience is necessary, and there are no commitments other than to having a great time. The registration fee gives also gives you a reduced cost on classes and events. You would need to choose the costume section that you want to be in, and the cost of the costume is in addition to the registration fee.

We try to have choices at different cost levels for all budgets. You can talk to the designers directly about signing up in the sections. Some of the sections have workshops where you actually make some of the costumes pieces. These workshops are lots of fun, and you have a chance to get to know the other people in the group. Someone will be at each Sat. & Sun. class from now until Carnaval signing people up, and we are trying to have drawings of all the costumes available by next Sunday.

"....And Carlos was so beautiful to watch. Poetry in motion. I loved watching how he would fine tune the bateria until we were a harmonious symphony Brazilian style. Even if he was out on the dance floor he would know whether or not we were in synch. He was also a very talented choreographer and seemed to feel very comfortable in his skin as a dancer. I loved the fluid moves he came up with and would demonstrate. As an artist, he would also conceptualize Foga's theme every year: the honorings, the colors. As a mestre, he taught capoeira to both children and adults. He was a born teacher and
artist. He knew what he was here this earth to do and he did it, making many of us smile and encouraging us to develop our talents as well.
More than anything, however, Carlos always practiced his arts with respect to the Divine Ones and the Ancestors. Everything he did honored them. May they watch over him now during his transition."

Every time I start to get teary-eyed, I hear Carlos's voice saying something like,"You know, you cry if you have to...If crying could
bring me back, I'd tell everybody, you know, cry! Cry until you've emptied everything in your body, til you're empty sacks, because I
still got a lot of ideas, a lot of things to do. But you know, that's not how it works... So, you (meaning all of us, y'all) got to carry on,
get out there, teach the kids, dance, make music, have a good time!

The Resplendent Quetzal

The bird is of great relevance to Guatemalan culture, being a character in the widely popular legend of the local hero Tecún Umán, a prince and warrior of the Quiché Maya during the latter stages of the Spanish conquest of the region. This quetzal was his nahual (spirit guide). The Resplendent Quetzal is Guatemala's national bird,

The Quiché repelled several attacks from the Spanish army, even though outmatched in weaponry (guns, armor and cavalry against spears and arrows).

Mesoamerican rulers and some nobility of other ranks wore headdresses made from quetzal feathers, symbolically connecting them to Quetzalcoatl. Quetzalcoatl was the creator god and god of wind, often depicted with grey hair. In several Mesoamerican languages, the term for quetzal can also mean precious, sacred, or erected. The Resplendent Quetzal is often held to be the most beautiful bird in the Western Hemisphere.
Particularly important to their diet are wild avocados, which the birds swallow whole before regurgitating the pit helping to disperse the seeds. Their habitat is montane cloud forests ofImage:ResplendentQuetzal.jpg Central America (from Southern Mexico to Panama). Resplendent Quetzals usually live alone when not breeding. When breeding, females lay two pale blue eggs in a nest placed in a hole which they carve in a rotten tree. Both parents take turns at incubating, with their long tail feathers folded forwards over the back and out of the hole, where they tend to look like a bunch of fern growing out of the hole. The incubation period lasts about 18 days, during which the male generally incubates the eggs during the day while the female incubates them at night.


Until recently, it was thought that the Resplendent Quetzal could not be bred or held for any long time in captivity, and indeed it was noted for usually killing itself soon after being captured or caged. For this reason it is a traditional symbol of liberty.

March 31st Cesar Chavez March & Festival

 On March 31st Mestre Carlos Aceituno was honored as a recipient of the Chavez Family Vision "Si Se Puede" Award. This award is only fitting for a man that embodies the core values of Cesar Chavez and lived them in everyday life.

 The  Fogo Na Roupa Bateria/Dancers and Omolu Capoeira were present in full regalia with drums to take part in the historical march.

 

 
The Si Se Puede Award
will be presented posthumously to Mestre Carlos Aceituno, a man who espoused Cesar’s core values in his everyday life, such as community and service to others. Mestre Aceituno founded the award winning Carnaval Group Fogo Na Roupa; consisting of both a performing company and a Grupo Carnavalesco (Carnival Group), he also taught Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art. His unwavering commitment in these areas of study touched the lives and hearts of many community members. It is only fitting that we come together as a community to celebrate and honor the great contributions of Cesar E. Chavez and Mestre Carlos Aceituno. Although these men are not with us in the flesh, they are with us in spirit, and will always have a special place in our hearts. For through their actions they taught us that "SI SE PUEDE"!

2nd Annual Festival Bellas Artes de Cesar Chavez

Mexican Heritage Plaza
At the Mexican Heritage Plaza a month long schedule of events celebrating the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez began March 30, 2007 and will continue throughout the month of April.

These events are being coordinated with the Cesar Chavez Family Vision of San Jose and will involve the active participation of Chavez family members, including Cesar’s sister, Rita Chavez Medina. She has Co-Chaired the events with San Jose Councilmember Nora Campos (District 5) and San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed. These events are intended to bring a heightened awareness of the life and work of Cesar Chavez, his many interests in music and literature, and his contributions to the farm worker and civil rights movement.

For those not acquainted with the Mexican Heritage Plaza, its mission is to affirm, celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Mexican community and showcase multicultural arts within the region. Quetzal embodies the soul and the struggle at the heart of the Mexican-American legacy.

"Cowboy" is a lot less folkloric, a lot more urban. It even incorporates elements of R&B with the addition of bearded, bespectacled Quincy McCrary on keyboard and vocals (in English) that evoke Stevie Wonder, but the key flavors are all still there traditional son jarocho from Veracruz, tasty salsa rhythms from the Caribbean and rock influences from Santana to Morrissey. "The point was to go places we haven't been before, to shed our skin," Flores said over lunch recently at a Mexican restaurant in El Sereno. "Instead of trying to replace people or a sound," added Gonzalez, "we just let the sound change." That restless creativity has been a hallmark of a group that has single-handedly carried the torch passed on by Los Lobos, East L.A.'s greatest band.

 Their mix of Mexican and Afro-Cuban rhythms, Jazz, R&B, and Rock is amplified by the vibrant vocals of Martha Gonzalez. , named for a tropical bird prized by the Maya for its resplendent plumage, was formed in the early '90s by guitarist-composer Quetzal Flores, the son of community organizers who cedes the spotlight to his wife, co-writer,  and lead vocalist Martha Gonzalez. Martha Gonzales is an outstanding vocalist who communicates passionately through these songs (in both English and Spanish) The band is a product of the barrio whose sensual, soulful music can often be indignant and insightful as it explores identity in times of upheaval. Their commitment to using art as a tool for social change is informed and inspired by global grassroots movements. For the past five years they have been instrumental in developing Fandango Sin Fronteras, a dialogue between Chicanos from California and Jarochos (musicians from Veracruz, Mexico).

"Sunday's 4pm carnaval class at Oakland's Malonga Arts was electric, euphoric. The energy was out of this world; people were coming close to passing out. I had to step out to catch my breath. It lasted all the way through 8:30 pm. Most bay area escolas de samba diehards and teachers were present to honor our master. Students of dance, and capoeira danced with an energy that would put a smile in our teacher's face; and those of you who have taken a dance/drum class know that he was not that easy to please. My estimate is at least a thousand people attended; some stayed at the altar in the lobby; the majority went up to the second floor; so the dance studio was totally packed, hardly any room to move! Musky incense was in the air to appease the spirits. There were beautiful pictures posted on the wall of our teacher throughout the past twenty years of carnaval fun. There was one photo of mid-1980's that made me chuckle; a rail thin guy with a mustache dressed with shiny disco clothes, and coming out of his car with a big smile. So many tears, so much joy, so much closeness that it felt like a family gathering to me. I never saw so many students dance so vibrantly,confidently, and with so much energy and moves! Batucada was super tight; they played their hearts out. Capoeira students did their thing so beautifully, with heart felt turns, kicks and chants. I felt totally transported to Salvador Bahia, northeast Brazil which is where the music he taught us comes from. I think everyone in that room knew that there was only one way to honor our teacher, and that is to express that spirit that he generously shared with us. It is an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. It all felt just so REAL; and you all know Carlos was REAL.

Your passing to the next world sent shockwaves through my veins... uncontrollably I cried, I cried, I cried. I prayed that through the universe my feelings would reach you, for words unspoken. The truth is your spirit has engulfed my being since the day we met. I always wanted your blessings and hoped in your heart you knew what you meant. I feel your life force now just as much as ever, which is a testament that you never really left. I pray that one day I will meet you again and we can have another dance.
