PARADE OFFICIALS’ STATEMENT

This year in addition to the official judging by our panel of illustrious experts, the contingents were required to move with the flow of the Parade. The rules this year were that if the Parade Officials ( Alina Laguna , Arturo Carrillo and Julio Suncin) agreed that a contingent deliberately created a gap, the group could be disqualified from the judging, placed at the end of the parade next year and would not be able to apply for a contingent grant next year.

While there were no major block-long gaps in the Parade, as in previous years, the Parade Officials identified five groups that violated the rules set out for the flow of the parade. The Artistic Director and the Parade Officials took time to meet individually with the five contingent leaders to allow them an opportunity to explain what occurred with their group on the parade route. After meeting with the contingent leaders, the Parade Officials agreed that the rules would be suspended this year and that no penalties would be imposed on any contingents in 2007. The rules will be fully enforced for the 2008 parade.

The committee thanks all those groups that abided by the rules and made the flow of this year’s parade better than in any other prior year. Keep it up for 2008!

[Editor's Note: Hopefully the parade will also start on time in 2008 as well and awards will be announced timely.]
