Carnaval 2005 King

Paulo Silva

Many are called but few are chosen twice. The young 24 year Brazilian was not to be denied a second time following a brief seven day reign in 2004 before a recount made him first runnerup.

Paulo's shares the immigrant experience with millions of his fellow Californians, following a path seeking the golden dream of the new world. This is where the tomorrows are better than the yesterdays and your children can grow up to be President and you might be governor. As an immigrant from Brazil, Paulo was an American before he arrived here, although his fancy footwork indicates he was born into a culture that loves to dance and come together as one in the spirit of celebration. This culture recently sent its minister of culture Gilberto Gil to the Mission district and UC Berkeley to deliver a message that Brazilians must spread their culture in the USA, that each Brazilian should  see themselves as ambassadors of their country and evangelists for a different way of relating to the world as one. What better place than here, now.

"For me life is continuously being hungry. The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer. "
Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger

Above left contestant Paulo performs in support of 2004 Queen Micaela's farewell performance at the Patio Espanola  King Paulo's Carnaval bloco is the internet's much loved Aquarela. Paulo successful election and corontation  gives the beautiful dancers an astonishing total of 4 Queens and 3 Queens.   As 2004 parade float passes in front Masonic temple on Mission Paulo appears to be floating in the moment as he rides an unfathomable rhythm rarely found in life but often nearby during Carnaval time.

Paulo like Aquarela founder  Maria and choreographer Silvana is also from Goiânia Brazil which is located near the capital Brazilia away from the coast where most Brazilians live,

Goiânia, the capital of the state of Goiás, a state in central Brazil, is a modern, bustling city of 1.093.007 (census of 2000) located on a fertile plain crisscrossed by numerous rivers, the most important being the Meia Ponte. It is 209 km from Brasília. wiki/Goiania

"I am so happy to declare you victor."
said Peter L. Balogh to King Paulo.
Mr. Balogh is was the 2005 King and Queen contest event producer and a recently appointed MNC Board Member. Peter also mediated the 2004 King contest where the tabulators miscalculated resulting in Paulo being declared the first Prince of Carnaval after a short reign as King of a single week. The error resulted when a judge disqualified himself from voting for a fellow contingent member but had his lack of scoring counted as a zero for last year's King Victor Temple

Next year the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts [www.missionculturalcenter.org ] will be doing a youth Prince and Princess contest of Carnaval in keeping with the great tradition of Carnavals everywhere to make the Carnaval bigger and better than ever before.

2003 Carnaval King Antonio Naranjo, one of Carnaval's greatest dance talents, shares a special moment with Paulo at the Gift Center Ceremony in 2004. Both Kings work in the restaurant industry when they are not following their passion for the dance of life.
