"Pronounced "shó ro," it literally means "to cry" in Portuguese, and it is a music with deep roots in the café culture of 1920’s Rio De Janeiro....Choro has been called modern acoustic jazz, classical ensemble repertoire, traditional dance forms based around a samba groove, and syncopated movement within African rhythmic structures....For Crying High, Choro is a powerful and rhythmic musical landscape." Mike Marshall
In 1995 Mike traveled to Brazil and fell in love with Brazilian choro music. Upon returning Mike began an in-depth study of the style and the result was the CD Brasil (Duets) on Earthbeat! records. This project showcases Mike at the top of his form as a mandolinist in duet settings with many of the top instrumentalists of the day.
