Determining Fat Tuesday

Machel Montano (born 24 November 1974 in Trinidad and Tobago) is a soca singer, record producer and songwriter based in the Caribbean.

He is the frontman of the popular soca band Xtatik, and is noted for his high energy, fast-paced, and often unpredictable on-stage performances

He now stands as one of the most well-known soca acts in the world and has tried in many ways to bring soca into the mainstream by promoting it, using his leverage as an artist able to sell-out shows. Recently he has moved to the Los Angeles area to further this pursuit saying "I may not be the one to bring it forth, but in the meantime, I have a lot of work to do in order for something to happen".[1]

Bunji Garlin (born 14 July 1979) is a Ragga Soca artist from Trinidad and Tobago. His real name is Ian Alvarez. He married fellow Soca artist Fay-Ann Lyons on December 23, 2006, daughter of legendary Soca singer Superblue [1]. He is also a second cousin of singer Patrice Roberts, who performs alongside the popular Machel Montano [2].

Bunji has won Trinidad's Soca Monarch competition on several occasions; 2002 (tied with Iwer George) with "Down in the Ghetto" [3], 2004 with "Warrior Cry" [4], 2005 with "Blaze the Fire" [5] and 2008 with "Fiery" [6].

Nelson  Rockefeller Rockefeller served as governor of New York from 1959 to 1973 (elected to four terms, he served three and a half). As governor of New York, he successfully secured the passage of strict laws against the possession and/or sale of drugs. These laws — which became known as the "Rockefeller drug laws" — took effect in 1973 and are still on the books, albeit in moderated form. They ranked among the toughest in the United States.

SOCA MONARCH COMPETITION 2008
Bunji Garlin won the 2008 Soca Monarch competition at the Trinidad & Tobago Carnival with a powerful performance of "Fiery." . Former king Iwer George had to settle for second place and third was Bunji's wife Fayann Lyons.

In the Groovy category, Sherwin Winchester moved a quiet crowd like no one could. Patrice Roberts came in second and Kerwin Dubois third. Bajan Biggie Irie, 2007 groovy king did not place in the top four

bossman Says:

The competition is not judged solely on the response of the crowd! If that were the case both fayann and shall marshal/kerwin dubois would have clearly won! Its just 10 points for cried response. Shurwayne and bunji clearly deserved to win as they presented their songs the best and their songs had the most content! Start seeing our music as substance filled songs that can educate as well as entertain so that it can grow… We have to get out of thus jump and wave “get on” bad carnival us baccahnal nonsense if our music can even stand a chance of growing. Hats off to shurwayne for a well written and produced groovy soca song… The way it should be.. And hats off to bunji for taking the time to educate the people about one of the greats in calypso music..,, being maestro… And for truly displaying the sweetness of our national instrument the steel pan! They truly deserve their titles! [source]

2008 Surprise: Parade Grand Marshall
Governor David Paterson
is first Black, first Caribbean [1/2], and first legally blind Governor of the Great State of New York

Elliot Spizter

2008 Historic Transition when Elliott Spizter threatened by impeachment for bedroom activities between consenting adults resigns his office following the disclosure of recorded sex tapes from a federal investigation.  Mr. Spizter had previously earned a reputation as a fierce enforcer of ethics in public life.

David Paterson

David Paterson is New York's 55th Governor — and the first African American to hold that position (and only the fourth African American governor in US history). Born  in Brooklyn in 1954 his family relocated to Long Island in search of better education opportunities for him after he lost his sight. He eventually earned a BA from Columbia University, JD from Hofstra Law School. He was first elected to represent Harlem in the New York State Senate in 1985 and elected the first Minority Leader of the New York State Senate in 2002, the first non-white legislative leader in New York's history.
His father is half Jamaican. His paternal grandmother, Evangeline Rondon Paterson (1900–1985)[7] was secretary to Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. His paternal grandfather was Leonard James Paterson (1894–1968), a native of St. George's, Grenada who arrived in the United States in 1917.

“From those to whom much is given, much is expected,” Mr. Elliot Spitzer said as he resigned his office. “I have been given much: the love of my family, the faith and trust of the people of New York and the chance to lead this state. I am deeply sorry that I did not live up to what was expected of me.”

“Over the course of my public life, I have insisted — I believe correctly — that people regardless of their position or power take responsibility for their conduct,” he said. “I can and will ask no less of myself. For this reason, I am resigning from the office of governor.”

“I look at my time as governor with a sense of what might have been,” Mr. Spitzer said in announcing his resignation. “But I also know that as a public servant I, and the remarkable people with whom I worked, have accomplished a great deal. There is much more to be done, and I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people’s work.”

The New York Times reported no love lost from Wall Street and particularly Richard A. Grasso, the former chairman of the New York Stock Exchange and a favorite Spitzer piņata, recalled that Spitzer aides had circulated allegations, never substantiated, that Mr. Grasso had had an improper relationship with his secretary.

The last NY Lt. Governor to assume the governorship was Malcom Wilson, who took over even more dramatically yet with a similar amorous cause when Nelson Rockefeller died "in the saddle" at the swanky love nest of his discreet mistress.

Elizabeth Nunez.jpg2008 Parad Grand Marshall
Dr. Elizabeth Nunez, Provost of Medgar Evers College,
to Serve as First and Only Female Grand Marshall of the 41st Brooklyn Carnival Festival August 14th, 2008
Dr. Elizabeth Nunez, Provost and Senior Vice President of Medgar Evers College, will serve as the first and only female Grand Marshall of the 41st Carnival Festival Parade and celebration on Labor Day on Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn. Provost Nunez will join Governor Paterson and Mayor Bloomberg as they cut the ribbon to start the parade at 11 am at Utica Avenue and Eastern Parkway, from where they will lead the parade down Eastern Parkway.

Dr. Nunez is an internationally known scholar of Caribbean literature and an award-winning novelist. She is co-editor with Dr. Jennifer Sparrow of the anthology Stories from Blue Latitudes: Caribbean Women Writers at Home and Abroad. Her novel Bruised Hibiscus won an American Book Award, and her latest novel Prospero’s Daughter was the 2006 Novel of the Year selected by Black Issues Book Review. She is the executive director of the CUNY-TV Emmy nominated television series Black Writers in America. Dr. Nunez has also authored grants that brought millions of dollars for programs in Ocean-Hill Brownsville
2008 WIADCA 2008 Grand Marshal Les Slater, Folklorist & friend of WIADCA founder Carlos Lezama

"Mr. Lezamas’ single - minded, determination and clear vision of what he thought such a major outpouring of Caribbean cultural expression should be, is the reason, above all, that the masses have been annually drawn in such untold numbers to this mother of all street festivals. And it surely would please him greatly that the caretaker role for the template he was so instrumental in forging, resides now with a WIADCA body that has manifested nothing short of full commitment to maintaining the founding vision in perpetuity.

"I deem it a singular honor and privilege to have been invited by WIADCA to be a Grand Marshal in this year’s event, and the organizers have my profound thanks for such graciousness. I have noted WIADCA’s mention of the invitation being extended in recognition of my contribution in the area of art and culture. With the association’s permission, may I point out that I have been blessed to have had, since 1991, a circle of extraordinary colleagues in the Trinidad & Tobago Folk Arts Institute, without whom some pretty enterprising endeavors in furtherance of the country’s rich cultural heritage would absolutely not have happened. I am enormously in their debt and consider WIADCA’s gesture a tribute to them as well.
