Hawks Pull Out of Carnival 2k7

“Hawks is one of the largest bands we have had continuously and, of course, not being there they are going to be missed not only by the revelers themselves and the masqueraders but by the audience, the thousands and thousands of spectators who come” Jean Alexander spokesperson for WIADCA Carnival producing organization told longtime CaribNewsRadio reporter Tony Best. “In hindsight, if we knew months ago that they were planning to withdraw and they had come to us, maybe we could have helped in some way,” Alexander insisted. “But we ourselves - financially, the West Indian carnival this year are in dire straights. We lost a lot, a lot of money last year because of the rain. A lot of our shows were rained out. We still had to pay the artistes because they were here, even though some of them didn’t perform and we were left holding the bag. This year, of all years, we don’t have the operating funds that we could have jumped out there and give financial help. If we had known months ago, something could have been worked out. But that’s all water under the bridge right now. Blaming the West Indian Carnival is not the right thing.”
Desmond Chase, Chairman of the the Hawks organization’s board of directors, gave several reasons for the pullout including taking a shot at the heavy-handedness of the NYPD parade management. He contends the NYPD,  virtually controls the parade and “makes major decisions about the flow of the bands and other matters that have little to do with security and safety of the revelers and the spectators.” Mr Chase also called for the WIADCA board to be opened up to vendor and band representatives. “Let me make it clear. We are not seeking a place on the Board for Hawks. That’s not our desire. We want to see the bands as a group, the entertainers as a group and the vendors represented. This is not about the Hawks. It is about the carnival and its success” he said

The Honorees for the 5th Annual International Soca Awards

SAO: Legend Award

This Special Merit Award is presented on occasion by the SOCA AWARDS Organization, Inc. to individuals or groups for ongoing contributions / influence in the recording field. The SOCA Legend Award began in 2004. – 2007 Recipients are: Edson “Ajamu” Mitchell & Austin “Super Blue” Lyons

Austin Lyons (1956), better known as Superblue, Super Blue, and Blueboy, is a Trinidad and Tobago calypsonian, soca musician and lyricist. Born in Point Fortin, Trinidad, he became famous from his first foray into the calypso tent world in 1980 with Soca Baptist a song he penned in 1979. Soca Baptist also won him his first Carnival Road March Monarch in 1980, while giving him the biggest win at that time though the magnitude of that win would be dwarfed by his own subsequent landslide victories. He went on to win the annual Carnival Road March title seven times and the Trinidad Soca Monarch (now the International Soca Monarch) title a record 5 times.

Superblue is famous for wearing blue costumes. He developed a reputation for performing daring antics while on stage for the Trinidad Soca Monarch competitions.

Superblue's daughter Faye-Ann Lyons, whose mother is calypsonian Lady Gypsy, is herself a well-known soca musician
