Louisiana is one of America's most fascinating states. Geographically, the mighty Mississippi River is the center to a  wide expanse of bayous and small tributaries which support a wide variety of wildlife and fertile cropland. Throughout the past,  plantation life was more prosperous and cosmopolitan here, you can still relive this history today with some smart planning. The City of New Orleans, with its international port ruled under 10 different flags, including the French and Spanish, and this diversity has cast its influential spell over the countryside.  The southwestern part of the state is know as Cajun country or Arcadia and was settled by French refugee planter from Canada's Nova Scotia who refused to alter their culture to suit new rulers. They invite you to join them for some of their famous cuisine and "Let the good times roll."  Once on the road,  you might want to visit the state capital of Baton Rouge, a standout historic city in a state filled with the charm of the ages.

"Evangeline" is a much loved story about Arcadia by the famous 19th century American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Here on the cusp of the 21st century we realize 20th century modernism has not allowed much space for those who built Yet mythology by definition has the last laugh, easily outlasting the present as part of the collective unconscious The poem celebrated its 150th birthday in 1997.
