The 2007 Pan American Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro.
Rio de Janeiro won the bid to host the games, in August 2002, in Mexico
City beating San Antonio, Texas, USA 30 votes to 22.
The City Government plans to invest about US$ 100 million in
construction and restoration works in the facilities proposed in the
project for the Rio 2007 Pan-american Games. The
competition venues for all sports, however, are subject to changes in
terms of location and design.

HISTORY:
The first Pan American Games opened on February 25,
1951, at Buenos Aires. More than 2,500 athletes from 22
countries participated.
This

in 1941 for games that would not occur for another 9
years.
The
organizing body is known as the Pan American Sports
Organization (PASO). Currently, 42 nations of North,
Central and South America and the Caribbean comprise the
organization. The official languages are Spanish and
English. PASO has headquarters in Mexico City and is
presided over by Mario Vasquez Raña of Mexico, who also
is a member of the International Olympic Committee.
PASO’s
motto
"America,
Espirito, Sport, Fraternité"
incorporates four of the languages in common use in the
Americas: Spanish, Portuguese, English and French. The
phrase loosely translates to English as "The American
spirit of friendship through sports."
