Gramado
About 21 miles (36 Km) due east of Nova Petrolis is Brazil's famous exclusive mountain resort. The 825m elevation keeps Gramado cool during the summer and like the region is chilly during the winter. The tourist office in the centr of twon at Av. Borges de Medeiros 1674  (daily till 9pm) is "extremely well organized and provides several excellent maps and comprehensive lists" The Rough Guide c'96 The well-todo argentines, Uruguayans, Paulistas and gauchos appreciate its many excellent restaurants, cheerful gardens and Swiss village architecture. Hydrangas are the featured flowers and they line the roads.

Canela is another 5 miles (8km) further east and it is a less developed version of Gramado and closer to the Parque Estadual do Caracol and its famous falls and deep canyon

Nova Petrópolis About 100 km north Porto Alegre and where German is still largely spoken. There are many Swiss chalet type structures as a result of the official attempts to promote building in the German character. As might be expected their festivals star their Ockoberfest on weekends in in October. Also there is the Festa de Verao on weekends during Jan & Feb and Festa do Folkore on weekend in July. All the events are held in the Parque do Imigrante which also features a historic village from the turn of the century and a helpful tourist office at the entrance (open daily till 6pm).
