dot_clear.gif (54 bytes)Probably the top Irish heritage parade in the Americas with increasing political overtones, huge crowds and plenty of suds for sale.
Tips: A good vantage point is St. Patrick's Cathedral, where the bishop of New York greets the marching pipes and bands... The insider suggests that you can avoid larger crowds by staying away from "shopping and work-a-day crowds that throng the sidewalks below 59th." ... Don't try to discuss politics with an Irishman and his beer.

That immigration continues today and it enables us to renew and reinvigorate our City. We will continue to fight the anti-immigrant provisions recently enacted in Washington and we will continue to get the message out that immigration is good for America."

When it's not freezing this parade competes with the Labor Day Brooklyn Carnival for largest attendance in North America and has the third largest TV viewing audience (only New Year's Rose Parade and Rio Carnaval parade are larger) as 45 million will tune in on the tradition across the USA.   Since 1924, the 4,000 employee-volunteers are the key to the parades success and 1200 attendants alone are needed to pull the world's largest giant hot air balloons along the parade route.
