Miss Universe, Wendy Fitzwilliam, made American talk show host
Sinbad feel like a king for a night when she crowned him with her priceless diamond tiara.
To the screams and shouts of the live studio audience in a fun moment, she placed the Miss
Universe crown on Sinbad's head during her celebrity interview with the superstar
actor/comedian, live from Hollywood, California Friday night.
"I promise to work with underprivileged
children," laughed Sinbad in a
melodramatic and tear jerking high pitched lady's voice as he posed fun at the new Miss
Universe. It was so funny that Wendy and the live audience just burst into hysterics. But
Wendy held her own, live on Vibe, as she spilled more of her magic on American viewers.
Exquisite and elegant in a jeweled cafe au lait coloured, spaghetti strap micro-mini that
worked wonderfully with her dark skin and skyscraper high heels, the new black Miss Universe glided down the winding
staircase on the Vibe set and stepped softly into her seven minutes of fame on night-time talk TV. Wendy was fabulous. She
also get two more minutes than the five minutes of fame that every American craves.
She was received with a standing ovation. When she and
Sinbad hugged at the end of the stairs, her tall host who usually towers way over any
guest who is not a basketball star, seemed stunned by her height and even more shocked by
the fact that she was six feet tall and a little extra with the inches on her high heels.
Wendy was a winner all the way. She was classified with one
word: "style." Immediately, she charmed her host. Sinbad started to melt into
his seat when her heard her hot Caribbean accent. "With that accent I want to buy you
a house right away, because I just love the accent."
Sinbad, who revealed that he had been to Trinidad for
Carnival, said he loved that Caribbean flavour. "I've been there for Carnival. I love
Trinidad because they live. People in
Trinidad live. They enjoy life and I wish sometimes, in America, we can take their same
flava."
Complimenting her on how "fine" she is, Sinbad
asked Wendy whether or not she had a history of entering pageants before she entered the
Miss Universe. "Miss Trinidad and Tobago was my very first pageant, before that I
never even attended one."
Surprised by her answer, Sinbad began to play her asking her
if she entered Miss Trinidad & Tobago because she felt she was all that and more. But
Wendy replied: "In Trinidad one
thing you can't have is an ego. All Trinidadians think they are the hottest thing since
Elvis."
She was showered with praise for her outstanding performance
in the Miss Universe Pageant where she beat out 80 contestants to take the coveted title,
a $40,000 US salary for the year ands $200,000 US in gifts and prizes. Miss Universe was
also on Vibe to flaunt some of her gifts. Wendy's beauty was accentuated with the
sparkling diamonds in the necklace, tennis bracelet and watch from her new designer
jewelry collection.
Sinbad treated his live audience and home viewers to some
memorable moments from the pageant which was held in Hawaii. "Girl can sing," he
said. Before Wendy could deny, Sinbad said, "If you can't sing, you faked the funk well." Miss Universe was in good company. She appeared
on a star studded cast which featured R&B super group Boyz II Men and 22 year-old
Milwaukee Bucks basketball star turned actor Ray Allen who stars alongside Denzel
Washington in the just released and already highly acclaimed Spike Lee movie He Got Game.
It was no small moment. She was announced in the opening
line up and shared equal space with the big stars. Sinbad did T&T some justice when he
announced that there were only two black Miss Universe winners in the 47 year history of
the pageant and both came from Trinidad and Tobago.
This was Wendy's first celebrity appearance as Miss
Universe. For the next 12 months she
will be living in the exclusive Miss Universe apartment in Los Angeles. She is expected to
make one international trip per month and countless television interviews. According to
Sinbad, be viewing because maybe she will be coming soon to a town or CARNIVAL near
you. |
