The São Paulo carnival may not have Rio's reputation and popularity, but its a big city Brazilian Carnaval as 350 thousand Brazilian visitors come to dance to the sound of São Paulo drums. Most of them from the interior of Sao Paulo and the nearby states of Parana and Minas Gerais. The city's samba schools perform all night in the Sambadrome, competing for the much-coveted samba award.
The festival takes place over a weekend, and in the fortnight leading up to the event further music and dancing takes place in the Sambadrome for free. Much of the population has taken advantage of the Carnaval weekend so there's a chance to appreciate the city without the hassle of the crowds and share the City's largest annual event with the proud Paulistas. Still Brazil is a country where every city has some sort of
Rehearsals-
-For those in São Paulo in the months leading up to Carnaval, there is the opportunity to watch the samba schools as they prepare and rehearse for the parade. Schools usually rehearse once a week from Sept/Oct until Carnaval in February. One of the schools that is right downtown--and just happens to be a four-time champion--is Vai Vai they usually can be found practicing every Sunday from 8pm to midnight at Rua Sao Vicente, 276 - Bela Vista.  Most rehearsals are open to the public, for a small fee of R$ 3-10, and are well worth a visit.
In 1968, the first official parade of Schools of Samba was held on Avenida São João

History: The Sambódromo, is administered by the São Paulo Tourism and hosts an average of 30 major events per year, besides the  Carnival. It is a popular venue for outdoor international music tours. Thus it is also known as  O Pólo Cultural e Esportivo Grande Otelo when it is hosting events concerts for up to 40 000 and Forumula 1 racing. Inaugurated in 1991, and designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer then had capacity for 10 thousand people and a length of five hundred meters built on Avenue Olavo Fontoura. It was last expanded in 1996, and  affectionately called Sambódromo, with its capacity expanded to 26,000 people.
The Carnaval de Sao Paulo generates about 25 thousand direct and indirect jobs in 52 sectors of the economy of the city making it the largest annual event in the busy city.

The carnival starts with some simpler “escolas de samba” (escolas de samba = these aren’t schools, but large samba clubs that have thousands of menbers and compete in the annual carnival parade) they “warm up” the spectators, before the best teams or escola de samba enter the arena

GLBT Samba School:

Escola de Samba Arco-Íris

The school, which starts in March of 2008 officially, the activities, is the first dedicated to the public Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) of the capital, although not a new initiative in the country  "There is a school of samba gay in Belo Horizonte and another in San Vicente (Baixada Santista), but they do not have the visibility that we have," says the chairman of the new agremiação, Eduardo Correa. "We know that there are groups are mobilizing to a school of samba gay also in Rio de Janeiro," he says.
Can Paulistas dance Samba?
The  Paulista, accustomed more to  arduous work has what has even been called by pundits the "samba of work. This is often by Cariocas who might be said to be more devoted to the lyricism and rhythm of the samba Rio.  Samba paulistano is more influenced by the heavier percussion rhythms, as the jongo-macumba, aka caxambu. The early Carnival celebrants did suffer  police repression, samba dancers, not just during Carnival, but throughout the year, were seen as marginal vagabonds who were to be made to feel unwelcome.  Carnival paulistano is linked to manufacturing zones of the city where two of the most traditional of Samba Schools; Vai-Vai and  Camisa Verde e Branco hail from.
State of Sao Paulo

economic engine of South America

Carnaval celebration and there is no bigger state in the Americas that Sao Paulo at 42 million inhabitants with only California close at 37 million.  Also like California the two states are the economic engines around which the respective ends of the Americas spin, yet they each possess somewhat arguably the most important high speed rail corridors in the world with choked skies above both Rio-Sao Paulo and San Francisco-Los Angeles may also share a short term future high speed rail as the corridors between Sao Paulo As the summer reaches its peak following the New Year the Carnaval melodies start to grow towards a February climax throughout the state.

   Carnaval Nightlife

The city is the home of the most cultured and educated middle class in Brazil which supports a wide variety of big city nightlife and restaurants. The scale is overwhelming so getting to know someone who will guide you around the attractions is very helpful. Most Paulistas won't even set foot in a club until midnight. Thursday night is the best night of the week before Paulistas escape to their weekend beach houses

São Paulo Gay Parade

features Trio electricos

2004 Gay Pride Parade in São Paulo
The largest annual parade in terms of audience is the São Paulo Gay Parade which organizers claim  attracts over 2.5 million people to Paulista Avenue in 2006. It is usually opened by the city's mayor. A large carnival runs along the avenue, with several Trio Elétricos and held at the beiginning of the Gay Pride month of Juneo[more]n

Besides the parade, the night life in São Paulo is lively during carnival time. For starters, during the 5 days of Carnaval, there are a huge number of paulistas who leave town for the beach Carnavals including Rio & Salvador, Bahia, thus making it possible to avoid São Paulo's famous late-night traffic jams. Carnival parties are happening in many night clubs as São Paulo always buzzes after dark like only great cities can. Your chances of finding a great party in the vibrant city with so many lively and crazy events is  especially good at Carnaval time.

Most visitors move only in a restricted area, comprising Downtown,  Jardins, Vila Madalena, Pinheiros, Ibirapuera, Moema, Paraiso, Itaim, Vila Olímpia. The two main entertainment districts are Rua 13 de Maio and Jardins. Take a cab into Vila Olímpia around the witching hour and cruise on the Rua Prof. Atilio Innocenti to check out other young folks on the prowl. Vila Madalena is more in vogue with the 25- to 45-year-olds who enjoy bars and restaurants more than dance clubs. The rule about wearing black when in doubt is especially true in Sao Paulo.

Some of the best-known shows can be seen at Olympia, Palace, and Tom Brasil.

If the idea is to run away the Carnival to a calm place, then São Paulo provides with other options as well, it is a world capital of gastronomy with many different restaurants.

Blocos & Bandas

Image:Cópia de Vila Maria Abre-Alas.JPGThe Sao Paulo Blocos & Bandas are increasingly organized as they return the joy of Carnaval to the streets and invite others to join in. They have their own relaxed standards which differ from the judged performance parades in sambodrome. There is much  more time given to spontaneous joy and fun with friends and strangers on the streets. Officially the bands and blocos of the street are affiliated to the Association of bands Carnavalescas of São Paulo (ABASP) - an entity that, together with the Prefecture of Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo Tourism (SPTuris), brings together the events official carnival in the streets of the city.
These two organizations also list the dates, times and area the groups will be parading which continue to remain in flux.
