PORTO ALEGRE began as a sprout of the Guaíba Lake. Its calm waters,
inside the continent, provided a safe anchorage that the ocean could not
offer. Great bodies of water have always inspired great carnavals.
The original small village
was created when Portuguese groups from the Azores came in the 18th
Century. Before this, Porto Alegre was the port of Viamão on the shore
of Guaíba Lake. Its ancient name was Porto dos Casais (Couples' Port), a
reference to the families that ran away from conflicts near the Uruguay
border. Later it received other Europeans from Germany, Italy, Poland,
Austria, France, Scotland and other countries. Also, Africans and Asians
collaborated to create a vivid, exciting and joyful culture that loves
to celebrate life as only Carnaval can.
Before the Europeans, the region was inhabited by natives from
Tupi-Guarani tradition. They left their footprints as a wealth of
geographical names. For example, the Guaíba Lake received its name from
the word Gua-y-be, which means "cove" or "bay". Today these souls return
at Carnaval time in the presense of the Porto Alegre Carnaval
Comanches and Guaianazes

Begin in December A tribute to thetraditional

Imperadores do Samba; Império da Zona Norte; Bambas da
Orgia; in December. Imperatriz Dona Leopoldina; Filhos da

There
is a healthy pre-Carnaval season in Porto Alegre of enredo
auditions, Queen contests and Carnaval parties but a large
proportion of the city does not participate. Follow the two
official web sites to try to find it. |

History
of Porto Alegre
Carnaval
 |
Porto Alegre carnival that
emerged from the slum "Areal da Baronesa", once a
beach on the river and today where Praça Conego Marcelino is
today located. It was populated by recently freed slaves. The
surviving newspapers tell us the names of the
Carnaval groups were 'Ases
do Samba, Nós os Comandos, Seresteiros do Luar, Nós os
Democratas, Viemos de Madureira. The neighborhood celebrated a
Black Momo, and the first popular coretoes of quarter.
Cordões are marching bands with dozens of people wearing
the same costume. At the end of the 19th century, two
large carnival associations were born.
The Carnival in Porto Alegre
first began as the entrudo brought by the Portuguese from
the Azores. This street Carnival is playful and exuberant
although it as little aspirations beyond letting loose some
steam. Entrudo is a wild free for all of thrown objects
and in Porto Alegre it featured
smelly lemons: where a wax ball of the size of a lemon,
filled with perfumed water and thrown at each other. Other
objects included eggs and flour in "vitimas" This entrudo was
also eventually prohibited. Another characteristic of the
Carnival of Porto Alegre that has been largely lost is the
Humorous Blocos with names like Tô Com a Vela, Canela
de Zebú Te Arremanga e Vem, Saimos sem querer, at one time they
competed with the Rio de Janeiro style samba schools. The
Humorous Blocos were eliminated by the City hall in the year of
1970. It is felt the main reason was the dislike of the
politicians for the Bloco's political satire. Another
characteristic of Porto Alegre carnival that has disappeared are
the Cordões or marching
bands, which at one time numbered over 70. Some of
their names were Algumas 'DK,Saldanha Marinho, Medianeira,
Por Causa de Quê, Areal da Baronesa, JB, Filhos da Candinha,
Comigo Ninguem Pode, IAPI', etc. Some said the bands were an
imported idea anyway, and many transformed themselves into
samba schools. Generally the Carnaval Groups until the 1950's
only admitted men in its a certain half and when the women
paraded were costumes were the feminine equivalent of the
corresponding men's costume.
An exclusive characteristic of Porto Alegre carnival is
the '
Muambas" The ' Muambas collect money for the official
parade at diverse points in the city, as well as the school
pavilion In 1977 they had became official which cost them
sone if their spontaneity. Their memory is honored often by the
Porto Alegre Carnaval.
