 According to historians, Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares
Cabral, after sailing through
the open waters of the ocean, saw the mountain today's Monte
Pascoal that showed them the way to the coast.
Cabral discovered Brazil on April 22nd 1500, a couple of thousand
years after the first Indians populated the country. Just north of Porto
Seguro . the first mass was said. Porto Seguro, founded in 1526,
has some claim to being the oldest town in Brazil, as buildings still
survive from that period but today it is better
known for being the youngest city in Brazil and the portal to the
Discovery Coast.
This coastal section has 90km of beaches protected by coral reefs, rivers, streams, coconut groves and the lush "Mata Atlântica". The Discovery Coast has 27 beaches. You can still find an ecological paradise that offers a mix of history, culture, art and natural wonders. You can also practice sports, try some good food, learn the "lambaeróbica" or simply relax, forget the day-to-day routine, sit back and think about nothing except the beautiful seascapes, blue skies and the sun that shines throughout the year. If your main interest is nightlife, this is the place but you’ve got to not mind crowds. During the day, sleep late and go from beach to trekking in the forest; At night the action goes into the wee hours of the next morning at the coast with lots of live music, often by very good international bands, reggae music, parties and good vibes in restaurants and beach huts by the sea. Porto Seguro’s modern action is centered in its Cidade Baixa (Lower City).
The riverside Avenida 22 de Abril (April 22nd Ave.) and its continuation,
Avenida Portugal, are a mass of bars, restaurants and hotels—so much so in
fact that Portugal Avenue changes its name at night to become the Passarela do Álcool, “Alcohol Strip”. Competing stand sellers urge you to
try their fiendishly strong cocktail called a capeta, a mixture of honey,
lemon juice, and guaraná powder (a tropical fruit from the Amazon) with
cachaça, the national hard liquor made from sugar cane. All the
same, Porto Seguro has somehow managed to retain its reputation as a
fairly classy destination. No structures are allowed to be taller than 25
feet and many stars such as Gilberto Gil and singer Gal Costa own
beachside villas here.
ATTRACTIONS: Schooners leave daily to Recife de Fora, coral reefs that at low tide form pools with crystal-clear waters. Other popular options are an excursion up the Buranhém River or trips to Coroa Alta, Trancoso and Caraíva.
Where Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil, landed in 1500: Just north of Porto
Seguro on the road to Santa Cruz Cabrália is the site , marked by a cross.
This is where the first Mass was said to have been celebrated in Brazil.
Locals fondly remember the Carnaval in 1984 when the theme
was the Adam and Eve story. Costumes were pretty skimpy to start with,
then temptation won again at Carnaval time and everyone stripped as the
script called for.

GETTING THERE:
The
Rodoviária is a little way out of town, but taxis are cheap and plentiful.
Three buses a day make the eleven-hour journey from Salvador, but one of
these is an extremely expensive leito service, and you should book
well ahead. |
